USAID supports Zimbabwean people to transition from emergency humanitarian aid towards long-term economic stability through agricultural recovery and livelihood development. President Obama’s Global Feed the Future initiative to reduce poverty and malnutrition, increase food security, and enhance economic recovery guides USAID’s food security interventions in Zimbabwe. Under this initiative, USAID works with both the private sector and civil society to rebuild deteriorated market linkages and provide training and support for small-scale farmers, particularly in drought prone areas. Since 2010, USAID has assisted over 140,000 smallholder farmers and linked about 30,940 farmers to markets over a five-year period. In 2015, USAID launched three new activities with combined value of $21.5 million over five years focused on crops, livestock, natural resource management, and water, sanitation, and hygiene. These activities will provide assistance over 62,000 small-holder households in good agricultural practices, linkages to markets, training in farming as a business, access to credit, nutrition, natural resource management, hygiene, water, and sanitation.
